The building that houses Tortuga was built sometime in the 1880s when the railroad came through Albuquerque.  Its original purpose was a General store for the neighborhood and it has had many functions since then.  According to our neighbors, it has been a cabinet shop, laundromat, a food distribution center and a YMCA.

Tortuga opened with the plan to hold an art show each month featuring local artists and then host events that would invite people in to experience and view the art.

Here's a partial list of events hosted at Tortuga:

Poetry readings, poetry slam, kids art show, formal dinner party, many kinds of music, dance recitals, rehearsals, business meetings, conferences, workshops, playshops, community potlucks, film and discussion groups, classes, craft shows, peace rally, community bowl sale, game night.
